Android is a mobile operating system for mobile phones and tablets developed by Google and the Open Handset Alliance; it competes with the existing mobile operating systems from Symbian, Apple and others.
In the past 12 months, Android has come under a lot of criticism for the number of malicious apps allowed into the marketplace. It is estimated (PDF) that between half a million to one million Android users have been affected by malicious software in the first half of 2011. Trend Micro’s chairman has claimed that Android-based devices are less secure than those running on Apple’s iOS.
Like with any malware, the device is only a part of the issue – all threats require human interaction to initiate – to click, download, etc. Trend Micro put together this infographic to plot Android-based threats:
