At Absolute, we are always listening to our customers and gathering feedback on the challenges they face within their IT environments. Many of our customers have reported that Microsoft SCCM is an important component within their IT security and management stack.

Microsoft Systems Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) is a widely used systems management solution, popular within Windows environments for common tasks such as software distribution and patch management.

Important SCCM components

SCCM relies on the presence of an agent and leverages Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) files for both client and server operations. Systems administrators familiar with the Windows architecture will know that reliance on WMI for device information and systems management tasks can be risky. If the necessary WMI files are missing or have become corrupt on a device, SCCM is unable to report accurate information, and in some cases the device goes dark. With the increasing prevalence of mobile workers, this introduces numerous risks.

The presence of SCCM components, such as WMI files, is critical for many of our customers to confidently manage the devices within their organization. Despite this reliance, some customers report that 10-20% of their total device population is not visible within SCCM.

SCCM Reporting and Alerts – Now available with Absolute DDS

With this information in mind, Absolute recently announced the expansion of the security reports within Absolute Data & Device Security (DDS) to include SCCM status reporting, including historic and proactive alerting when the status of SCCM components has changed.  This allows customers to easily view the status of SCCM across their entire device population, including devices that are off the network.

Customers can receive an alert when the SCCM status changes on a specific device and take the necessary Risk Response measures with Absolute DDS. Depending on the scenario, this could include messaging the user to assist them with repairing SCCM, or if the risk is greater and the device was missing a critical patch, administrators could remotely freeze the device.
