How to Mitigate the Millennials Risk

Millennials are the single largest generation in the US workforce. And they’re also the ones putting your data at risk. In our recently released 2015 US Mobile Device Security Report, we show how Millennials (age 18-34) are most likely to access content that puts data at risk, to modify default settings, and to use corporate-owned devices for personal work. And they do so knowing that these activities put data at risk.

Following the release of our report, I spoke with eSecurityPlanet about how to address the Millennials risk:

“Because millennials grew up in a connected world, their expectations are different than those of previous generations. As millennials move into the workforce and up the corporate ladder, organizations need to be more adaptive with security policies. Gone are the days of having one generic policy for all employees. More progressive organizations are looking at having policies that allow certain flexibility in how employees use technology but also provide guidelines around clear ramifications.”

As I note in the article, ramifications are key to the success of security policies, as employees currently do not believe that security is their responsibility nor that they should be held accountable for their mistakes if data is lost.

In the article, I explore in depth our 3-Pronged Approach to mitigating security risks through policy (customized to address different employee behavior), education and technology that offers a layered approach to data security that includes encryption, anti-malware and remote endpoint security capabilities. We believe it is key that IT have a way to monitor all devices, regardless of their form factor, user or location, be alerted of suspicious activities, and have a way to remotely take action if corporate data is at risk.
